Rotterdam - Local Attractions

Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe and was the busiest in the world until Shanghai took its crown in 2004.  It is the 2nd largest city in the Netherlands, and although it is often overshadowed by Amsterdam, it has much to offer the visitor.

As befitting the 2001 European Capital of Culture, it has several fine museums including the Witte de With centre for contemporary art and, of course, the Maritime Museum. The city also has an orchestra and is home to the Rotterdam Institute of Fine Arts.  However, nearby Amsterdam is still the destination overwhelmingly favoured by tourists. This historic city offers everything a visitor could want in terms of nightlife, culture, shopping and strolls by scenic canals.

Rotterdam is the ideal starting point for a tour of continental Europe. In addition to exploring the Netherlands themselves, tourists can easily journey to Belgium, France and Germany.   The train service from Rotterdam is excellent and all of the major car hire companies have offices at the port.
