Ferry from Las Palmas to Arrecife
If you plan on going to the canaries, a ferry crossing from Las Palmas to Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote, certainly is a good and cheap alternative to flying.
There are two main operators, Trasmediterranea, sailing weekly with a Jet Foil High Speed Ship that takes about 6.30 hours, and Naviera Amas, who cross five times a week taking 7.15 hours.
Arrecife itself certainly has all the appeals of a capital city. It offers clubs and bars, shopping, the most popular street is Calle Royal in the centre, picturesque walks along the promenade or in one of the many parks and, of course, culture. Haunted by pirates in the 17th and 18th century there were two castles build at the entrance of the harbour, which are now a popular tourist attraction. Another must-see is El Charco des San Grinnes, a lovely little bay within the city which is surrounded by old fishermen’s houses.
Should you be looking for a special place to dine, the top floor restaurant of the famous Grand Hotel is a good choice, offering spectacular views across the city. For those who want to travel on, ferry connections to Tenerife, Madeira and the mainland of Spain leave on a frequent basis from the harbour.
